How Often Should You Mow Your Lawn in Sydney?
A practical mowing schedule for Sydney and Macarthur lawns through spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Mowing frequency in Sydney's south-west isn't a fixed number — it follows how fast the grass is actually growing, and that changes a lot between a humid January and a cold July morning in Ruse.
A season-by-season guide
- Spring (Sep–Nov): growth takes off. Weekly to fortnightly is usually right.
- Summer (Dec–Feb): warm-season grasses like buffalo and couch grow fast with storms and humidity — fortnightly at minimum, weekly if you like it short.
- Autumn (Mar–May): growth slows. Every two to three weeks is generally enough.
- Winter (Jun–Aug): many Macarthur lawns barely grow. Monthly, or as needed to tidy up.
The one-third rule
Never take off more than about a third of the leaf in a single cut. Scalping a lawn stresses it, opens gaps for weeds and leaves it looking brown for weeks — particularly on buffalo, which is common right through Campbelltown.
Signs you've left it too long
- Clumps of clippings sitting on the surface after a cut
- Yellow or straw-coloured lawn immediately after mowing
- Weeds flowering and setting seed above the grass line
If your lawn has already got away from you, it's usually better to bring it back over two cuts a week apart rather than one hard scalp.
